Morning Light Descends
after Michael Field
As thou sittest, lost in thought, amidst the morning’s hush where sunlight filters, pale and cold, through windows unadorned, the silence of the household wraps thee, like a cloak, and in its folds, thy heart, a fluttering bird, doth find its nest.
In this stillness, thou findest solace, a balm for thy weary soul, for in the quiet, thou art free to ponder, unencumbered, the trifles of the day, the small, sweet pleasures, that, like a gentle brook, doth soothe thy spirit, and make it whole.
And as thou sittest, thus, enveloped in morning’s peaceful grasp, thy thoughts, like autumn leaves, do rustle, softly, to the ground, and in their gentle falling, thou dost find a sense of peace, that, like a summer’s breeze, doth stir thy heart, and make it sing.
I drew from Michael Field's focus on the intimate lives of women and the emotional resonance of everyday objects, as well as their use of formal, slightly archaic language and dramatic dialogue. I aimed to capture the quiet, peaceful atmosphere of a morning scene, where the speaker finds solace in the stillness.
