Old Stone Wall
after Edward Thomas
The stones are mossed and lichen grown in places where the mortar’s worn the wall stands uneven, weathered, its purpose almost forgotten now it divides two fields of different green where wildflowers bloom and fade
in one field the grass is tall and gold and in the other it is short and green the wall runs on, a jagged line that marks a boundary, nothing more yet in its roughness I find something that speaks of time and slow decay
I took the focus on natural details and the subtle shift into meditation from Edward Thomas, applying it to a minor detail like an old stone wall. His use of simple, concrete words and avoidance of overtly poetic language also influenced my approach.
