Moonlit Garden Sanctuary
after Francis Thompson
In the stillness of a moonlit garden where diaphanous shadows play upon the grass and effulgent blooms unfold their tender petals like celestial banners in the night air
the trees stand tall and unmoving sentinels of the divine their leafy branches etched in silver light as if the very essence of the stars had been distilled into this moment of perfect tranquility
and in the distance a solitary bird takes flight its wings beating with a slow and mournful rhythm that stirs the heart to awe and reverence for in its soaring trajectory I behold the majesty of the infinite and the mysteries that lie beyond
I drew from Francis Thompson's fascination with the intersection of nature and spirituality, and his use of formal, ornate diction to evoke a sense of wonder and enchantment. I applied this to a specific instance of a moonlit garden scene to create a new poem in his lineage.
