Liberty's Flame Flickers

after Lord Byron

Thou dost stand upon the windswept shore where sea and sky in tumultuous harmony meet to conspire against the tyrant’s might and as the waves crash forth in liberty’s name thou feelest stirring within thee a fire that burns to cast aside the shackles of oppression and stride forth unencumbered into the dawn

The mountains rise afar a rugged sentinel guarding the secrets of a bygone age when heroes walked the earth and honor was the creed that guided thee through life’s tumult and thou dost feel the weight of their legacy upon thy shoulders as thou strivest to be free

I took inspiration from Lord Byron's fascination with the Mediterranean and his themes of liberty and identity, and applied them to a new instance of a hero standing against oppression. I aimed to capture his sense of urgency and fluidity through long, sinuous lines and sparse punctuation.
