Lisbon Morning Light
after Fernando Pessoa
in the empty streets of Lisbon where shadows still linger a faint sense of possibility stirs like a forgotten ember
the city’s stones seem to absorb the faint glow of dawn’s promise and I am left to ponder the fragments of a life
in this quiet hour before the world’s din and chaos I find a fleeting sense of peace that will not last
the light creeps over rooftops and I am filled with a sense of longing for something just beyond my grasp
I took the themes of melancholy and longing from Fernando Pessoa, and the setting of Lisbon's streets, to create a poem that explores the fleeting sense of possibility in the morning light. I aimed to capture the essence of his style by using formal, conversational diction and sparse punctuation.
