Morning Light on Stones

Morning Light on Stones

after Alan Seeger

As morning’s radiance ascends the hill and gilds the ancient stones that lie scattered, like Nature’s own rubble, upon the grassy slope, I find my thoughts entranced by their worn beauty and the soft, lucent shadows cast beneath them, like a promise kept in secret, hidden from the sun

And as I wander, lost in contemplation, the stones, like sentinels of earth, stand watch, their weathered surfaces a testament to time’s slow, gentle touch, which smooths the edges of all things, and brings a soft, seraphic glow to the rough, unyielding heart of stone

I took inspiration from Alan Seeger's fascination with nature and his use of classical allusions, and applied it to a minor detail, the play of morning light on stones. I aimed to capture his gentle, lilting rhythm and formal diction in the poem.
