Riverbank Solitude
after Matthew Arnold
Along the sluggish river’s course, where willows lean and trailing verdure trembles in the current’s sigh, a solitary figure stands, absorbed in contemplation, lost to the world, yet bound to its desolate beauty.
The river’s voice, a low and mournful murmur, seems to underscore the stillness of the scene, as if the very landscape itself were a testament to the quiet desperation that oftentimes besets the human heart, when torn between the longing for connection and the comfort of solitude.
I drew inspiration from Matthew Arnold's emphasis on the tension between nature and culture, as well as his use of formal, elevated diction. His characteristic balance of opposing ideas and emotions also influenced my approach to this poem.
