Seed in the Crack

in the stone wall a seed takes hold its tender shoot a green flame that splits the cold grey rock and pushes upward to the light
the stone that once seemed solid now shows its hidden fissure where the seed’s roots take their grip and slowly start to unfold
in this small crack a world opens its tiny beak to cry for nourishment and air and the stone’s hard heart is broken
I took from William Blake his emphasis on the symbolism of small, natural details and his use of simple, direct language to convey profound ideas. I applied this to the image of a seed growing in a crack in a stone wall, exploring the contrast between the hard, unyielding stone and the tender, resilient seed.
